Cantor Andrea Rae Markowicz

CANTOR ANDREA RAE MARKOWICZ is the Senior Cantor of Am Shalom (Glencoe, IL). Ordained from Hebrew Union College-Jewish Institute of Religion (HUC-JIR), she holds a Master of Sacred Music from HUC-JIR, Master of Music from Cleveland Institute of Music, and Bachelor of Music from University of Michigan. She is a proud member of the American Conference of Cantors (ACC), Actors Equity Association (AEA), and the American Guild of Musical Artists (AGMA).

Prior to becoming a Cantor, Andrea toured Israel in 1776, the United States in Camelot, starring Robert Goulet, and in the musical Anne Frank: A Voice Heard. Favorite regional productions include Hair, Fiddler on the Roof, Guys and Dolls, The Boyfriend, The Gondoliers, The Magic Flute, and Andrew Lloyd Webber’s Music of the Night. Other notable credits include Carnegie Hall in Noel Coward’s Centennial Celebration and Radio City Music Hall for the ESPY Awards. A sought-after concert performer, productions include Shalom Broadway with Broadway Pops International, Beyond Fiddler: A Journey through Jewish Musical Theater, The Whole Megillah: The Story of Yiddish Theatre, and Stars of David.

Through the Central Conference of American Rabbis (CCAR), Cantor Markowicz advised on content for the URJ’s machzor, Mishkan HaNefesh for Youth, and her voice is featured leading Havdalah and Sheva B’rachot on the app and e-book Birkon Mikdash M’at-NFTY’s Bencher. During the 2020-21 school year, she served as adjunct instructor for the Debbie Friedman School of Sacred Music at HUC-JIR and is a past member of HUC-JIR’s Alumni Leadership Council. For the ACC, she co-chaired, produced, and directed the 2018 Jack Gottlieb Memorial Concert and is co-chairing the 2024 Journey to Israel.

Andrea is the soloist on Tikvah (Albany Records), a multimedia musical oratorio inspired by her grandfather, Philip Markowicz (z”l), a Holocaust survivor, author, and Torah scholar; and is proud to have recorded and produced six albums via Music at Am Shalom (soundcloud.com/am-shalom/albums).
